The desire to go to school can be fulfilled at any age. It is a difficult prospect for some people when compared to other individuals however. Single mothers often find that acquiring an education is both costly and hard to achieve due to their family situation and their possible work load. There is hope for single mothers, however. This hope comes in the form of college grants for single moms. In a previous article, we discussed some information about low interest student loans for single moms and how they work, so lets take a look at the grant process for schools.

These types of grants are available in wide variety and they are freely capable of being utilized by any mother who qualifies. There are generally a few restrictions and requirements but these are not difficult to meet. The most prolific requirement is that the mother in question has to actually be single. Even a marriage on paper where the spouse does not live in the home or even the state can cause paperwork issues. Beyond that factor there are a few other items to keep in mind. The age of the child can be called into question. A grown child might not be an eligible reason for the acquisition of these grants. If the legally adult child has special needs or some other reason where they remain a dependent after they become a legal adult then there may be leeway in the matter.

Grants are similar to government and private sector loans. However, a grant does not need to be repaid. This sort of financial aid is considered a gift to aid an individual. As such the requirements are necessary to make sure the intended recipients receive the money. Often a single mother must also prove financial hardship for the acquisition of certain grants. This is not always the case. The main requirements for most grants of this type are simply being single and having a child. The need for the grant comes in at various points due to the number of these types of grants in existence.

There are two primary methods of acquiring these grants. These methods are the direct method and the proxy method.

The direct method is the option women take when they desire to apply for grants on their own. This method is free but it can be time intensive and the chance of misplacing forms or filling them out incorrectly is much higher. When a single mother wishes to apply for grants directly they will need to register with a listing site. The most common site to join will be the government grant base site. This site requires registration as an individual or organization in need. There are several sites to utilize and the one a single mother will need is a site dedicated to education grants.

When the direct method is used an application packet will be sent to the mother’s home and she will need to fill it out to completion. Once this has been accomplished it is mailed back to the grant office and then she must wait. If she is eligible and she has filled out the paperwork exactly as required then most of the time the single mother in question will receive her education grants.

The proxy method for acquiring college grants for single moms involves hiring a grant writing service to locate and file grants on the mother’s behalf. This is the preferred method of single mothers who do not have the time to perform this research personally. There are two types of proxy service. These types are non-profit and commercial. While the non-profit version does charge money, they are normally far less expensive than commercial grant writers. The commercial writers may perform a more exacting and thorough service, however. Ultimately the choice of which type of company to work with will fall to preference and budget.
